SVA Killer Work ad class student feedback Fall 2013

Here’s some feedback from the fabulous minds of Fall’s School of Visual Arts Killer Work advertising class. They’ve generously agreed to include contact info if you’d like to ask a question. You can also reach me at simon@adiocracy.com.

I asked students to rate Killer Work on a scale of 1-5 (5 being tops!!)

Join us for the first Killer Work class of 2014. We’ve got lots of fun things planned!

Killer Work made me fall in love with advertising again!

Killer Work’s a 5 out of 5! Mark helped me take a step back from my everyday creative work and challenge myself to conceptualize and really look for a good idea.

He made us think – powerful and strategic thinking- from different perspectives. I really appreciated the way he helped give our ideas a twist and really explained when they didn’t work. As for improvements, maybe we could do more work as a group, and see more inspirational work of ads with great ideas.

I give Killer Work a 5 out of 5!

Before I took ‘How to Do Killer Work’ I never understood why it was so important to revisit your work. I always thought that if something was given a poor critique it was a piece of crap and shouldn’t be worked on anymore. But this class taught me that there is always something worth revisiting, may it be the tagline, the visual, or even the idea itself. It allowed me to look at a project through a different lens and execute projects in different ways.

In Killer Work I learned that every great ad starts with a big idea, and if you can’t articulate your idea than you don’t have a great ad. I liked that we didn’t just get feedback from Mark, but we presented our work directly to our peers and got feed back from everyone in the classroom.

I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who’s looking to better understand their own creative process.

On a scale of 1-5 ‘Killer Work’ is a 5!

I obtained much needed practice concepting ideas, writing headlines and taglines, and built a greater understanding of what it takes to create a deeply, more layered ad.

The big takeaway for me was understanding how to create a more interesting, layered ad that has true depth. I would often become discouraged at my job trying to balance the day-to-day tasks with concepting, and did not dedicate the time needed to actually develop the idea. Being able to solely focus on this concepting part helped me reconnect with my more creative side.

The class structure was great. Presenting our ideas helped create more clarity for myself about my work as well as help me become more articulate by presenting the work to other students.

I would definitely recommend Killer Work to anyone interested in taking a course in advertising. There were many benefits to taking this class. I think anyone else who takes it and who dedicates their time to it, will experience the same.

On a 1-5 scale, I give ‘Killer Work’ a 4.5.

Killer Work was an insightful look at the thinking behind what makes good advertising. Mark lead the pack well and pushed the students to do their damnedest to create their own ‘personal best’ work.

The class helped me hone my understanding of the thinking behind, and process of creating solid work. Advertising sure as hell isn’t a short sprint filled with bursts of glory – it’s an arduous battle and mind-bending work – which I actually enjoy.

Killer Work focuses on the process of getting to that “Killer Idea” – not just cranking out something that looks good, sounds good and will probably not interest people.

I’ve got zero except that time sure as hell flew by.  I’d most definitely recommend Killer Work.
